Salome Frogs

The 2019 football season for the Salome Frogs came to an end Nov. 1 as they fell to the Hayden Lobos, 30-8, in an Arizona Interscholastic Association 1A quarter-finals game in Salome.

It was a season that saw the Frogs compile a record of 3-1 in their region, the 1A West, and a record of 6-2 overall. They were ranked No. 4 in the AIA power point rankings, and they had earned a bye in the first round of the state playoffs.

The 1A playoffs now shift to Coronado High School in Scottsdale, where the semi-finals and the state championship game will be played. In a game that will be played either Nov. 8 or Nov. 9, the Lobos will face the No. 1 team in the state in 1A, the Williams Vikings. The Vikings reached the semi-finals by defeating Arete Prep, 78-8 Nov. 1 in Williams.

The other semi-final game will see No. 7 Mogollon taking on No. 3 Superior. Mogollon reached the semi-finals by upsetting the No. 2 Bagdad Sultans by a score of 28-18 on Nov. 1 in Bagdad.

With the defeat of the Frogs and the Sultans, no teams from the 1A West are left in the state tournament.

The 1A State Championship game will be played at 6 p.m. Nov. 16 at Coronado High School.
