The 2018 season for the Parker Broncs varsity football team came to an end Nov. 2 when they lost to the Morenci Wildcats, 57-6, in the first round of the state 2A playoffs. The Broncs, who were at the state playoffs for the first time in years, were seeded No. 13. The Wildcats had been seeded No. 4.
Broncs’ Head Coach Jeston Lotts said the game was played after a long bus ride for the players, but added that did not detract anything from Morenci.
“Morenci is a great team,” he said. “They’re a class act, a great organization, and just the nicest people.”
He went on to say this did not detract from what the Broncs accomplished this season. They made the playoffs after finishing second in the 2A Verde section with a 3-1 record against the section opponents. They were 5-1 against other 2A teams, and 6-3 overall.
Lotts said the 2018 Broncs were one of his best experiences in coaching. He said they played and worked together as a team, and they played hard.
The Broncs will be losing some seniors who performed well, Lotts said. However, they will be having some skilled players and good linemen coming back. He added he hoped 2018 set the pattern for years to come.
“Hopefully, we’ll have the same kind of team next year,” he said.
The Morenci Wildcats will face the No. 5 seed, the Phoenix Christian Cougars, Friday, Nov. 9, in Morenci. The Cougars advanced to the second round with a 35-21 win over the Scottsdale Christian Eagles Nov. 2.
The state 2A championship game will be played the day after Thanksgiving, at 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at Camp Verde High School.
