The Parker Broncs football team is seen with the firefighter’s axe that is the traveling trophy in the football rivalry between the Broncs and the Wickenburg Wranglers. The Broncs won the axe in 2019. They’ll battle for it again Aug. 21 in Wickenburg when they start their 2020 football season against the Wranglers.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association has announced the 2A high school football schedules for this fall. All schools are expected to follow the AIA’s guidelines for re-introducing high school sports following the shutdown of activities due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 2A conference has been restructured this year, and the Parker Broncs will be in the 2A Agua Fria region. One of their new region rivals is a new school:  St. John Paul II Catholic High School in Avondale. They describe themselves on their website as a co-ed, college-prep school. Their team name is the Lions.

Two former rivals from the 2A Verde will also be in the 2A Agua Fria:  the Tonopah Valley Phoenix and the Trivium Prep Crimson Knights. The Crimson Knights were the 2A Verde champions in 2019, going 4-0 in region play and 9-0 overall in the regular season. They were the only school to defeat Parker in the regular season.

The two other schools in the 2A Agua Fria are familiar opponents for the Broncs:  the Glendale Prep Griffins and the Kingman Academy Tigers.

Other familiar opponents are in the Broncs’ schedule for 2020. The season gets underway Aug. 21 with the Battle for the Axe with the Wickenburg Wranglers. A firefighter’s axe has served as the traveling trophy of the long-standing football rivalry between Parker and Wickenburg. The Broncs won the axe last year in Parker. For the last few years, the home team has been the one that won the axe. As this year’s game will be played in Wickenburg, let’s see if the Broncs can break that streak and bring the axe back with them.

Other familiar opponents include the River Valley Dust Devils from Mohave Valley and the Antelope Rams from Wellton.

The following schedule is subject to change. Home dates are in bold. Unless otherwise noted, all games are on Fridays at 7 p.m.
