Salome Frogs

The Salome Frogs are headed for the Arizona Interscholastic Association state 1A football playoffs. They have earned a bye in the first round and won’t play their first game until Friday, Nov. 1 at home.

The Frogs completed their 2019 regular season with a 52-8 win over Anthem Prep Oct. 18 in Salome. They were coming off a 46-14 loss to the Bagdad Sultans the week before on the road. The Sultans are ranked No. 2 in the state, and are the only team in the 1A West ranked higher than Salome.

The other two teams in the top four are the Williams Vikings (No. 1) and the Superior Panthers (No. 3).

Salome finished the season with a 3-1 record against their 1A West opponents, their only loss coming at Bagdad. They were 6-2 overall. Coming into the state playoffs, they are ranked No. 4 in 1A teams by the AIA power points system. As they are ranked in the top four, they have earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

On Nov. 1, the Frogs will face the winner of the first round game between No. 5 Hayden and No. 12 St. David. That game will be played Oct. 25 in Hayden. Game time for the Nov. 1 second round game will be 6 p.m. at Wayne Sweetland Field at Salome High School.

The AIA state 1A championship game will be played Nov. 16 at Coronado High School.
