After a season-long drought, the Parker Broncs soccer team finally got one in the “win” column Feb. 20 as they defeated the Page Sand Devils, 3-1, in Parker.
“Finally!” Coach Lonnie Lewis said. “We’re so happy!”
It was a rare Saturday afternoon game, and the wind played a factor. In the second half, the wind seemed to be pushing the ball into Parker’s end of the field as the Broncs defended their 2-1 lead.
With barely a minute left in the game, winger Alberto Larraga, one of only three juniors on the roster, scored his second goal of the afternoon to ice the win for the Broncs.
Bryan Bojorquez, a freshman, scored Parker’s other goal.
Lewis noted his team is mostly freshmen and sophomores, some of whom had never played soccer competitively before this year. He praised the players for their efforts, particularly their work at improving themselves as the season moved along.
“They’ve been working hard all season,” Lewis said. “This was earned and deserved.”
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Feb. 16, the Broncs lost a home game to the Wickenburg Wranglers, 5-3. Jose Aguayo scored two goals for Parker, while Jovanny Hernandez had the Broncs’ other goal.
The win improves the Broncs’ record to 1-4 in the 3A Northwest and 1-8 overall. They’ll play their final home game of the 2021 season Tuesday, Feb. 23 when they face the North Phoenix Preparatory Gladiators. Game time is 5 p.m. at Joe Bush Stadium. They’ll close out the season with a pair of road games. They’ll play the Glendale Prep Griffins Feb. 25 and the Northwest Christian Crusaders Feb. 27
