The 2A state tournament “play-in” games for baseball and softball have been set. The Parker Broncs baseball team will face the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions April 30 in Parker. The Broncs softball team will play the Chandler Prep Titans May 1 in Chandler.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association ranks the teams according to their “power points.” The top eight teams automatically qualify for the state tournament. The next 16 teams have play-in games that will reduce the number of teams in the state tournament to 16.
The baseball Broncs finish the regular season with a record of 7-1 against their 2A West opponents, which left them all alone in first place as the second place Trivium Prep Crimson Knights lost to the Arizona Lutheran Coyotes, 5-3. Trivium Prep finished the regular season with a 6-2 record against their region rivals.
Despite winning their final game of the season over Heritage Academy of Laveen, the Broncs saw their ranking in AIA power points drop from No. 8 to No. 12. This means they will need to play a “play-in” game to reach the state tournament.
By the end of the week, the Broncs had been moved up a notch to No. 11. According to the AIA brackets posted on the AzPreps365 website, the No. 11 team is slated to play the No. 22 team. As of April 27, that team was the Sedona Red Rock Scorpions.
Sedona Red Rock was 6-6 in the 2A Central, which landed them in fourth place. They’re 7-7 against other 2A teams, and 9-10 overall. They’ve been hot lately, winning five of their last six games, including 16-6 win over the North Pointe Falcons in their final regular season game April 22.
In their last six games, the Scorpions have outscored their opponents, 77-24. Their only loss was an 11-1 loss to the Camp Verde Cowboys April 20. Camp Verde was the 2A Central region champions and are ranked No. 5 in the state.
The play-in game will be at 3:45 p.m., Tuesday, April 30, at the Parker High baseball field.
The Parker Broncs’ softball team closed out their regular season April 23 with a 22-8 loss to the Heritage Academy Heroes of Laveen. This left them with a record of 3-5 in the 2A West, which put them in fourth place. They were 6-6 against other 2A teams, and 6-13 overall. They are ranked No. 22 in AIA power points.
The Broncs lost six of their last eight regular season games.
The Chandler Prep Titans are ranked No. 11. They were 8-0 in the 2A Valley region, and are the region champions. They’re 10-3 against other 2A teams, and 12-4 overall. They lost their final regular season game to the Thatcher Eagles, 12-6, April 26.
Prior to that game, the Titans were riding an eight-game winning streak. In that streak, they never failed to score fewer than 11 runs. They topped 20 runs three times.
The softball play-in game will be played May 1 in Chandler.
