Parker Broncs

The Parker Broncs girls’ volleyball team swept both the Lake Havasu Knights and the Wickenburg Wranglers this past week, but the big news is their season has been placed on hold until Sept. 26. Assistant Coach Dan Maya said five of the players have tested positive for the coronavirus.

Maya, who is also Parker High’s Athletic Director, said the match scheduled for Sept. 17 at River Valley in Mohave Valley was canceled. The home match scheduled for Sept. 21 against the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks has also been canceled. This would’ve been the Broncs first match against a 3A West opponent. The Broncs will also miss appearing in the Epic Tourneys Volleyball Invitational this weekend at Arizona State University in Tempe.

The Broncs’ next match will be a home match against Veritas Prep on Tuesday, Sept. 28. The varsity is set for 6 p.m.

Maya said the girls who tested positive are all doing well, and they are displaying only mild symptoms.

This is the second time a Broncs’ girls’ team has had to cancel part of their season due to the coronavirus. This past spring, on March 3, the Broncs varsity girls’ basketball team had the remainder of their regular season canceled after a player tested positive. They had two regular season games left, and they were vying for a playoff spot. The cancellation meant they lost any chance to reaching the post-season.

The Broncs played the Wickenburg Wranglers Thursday, Sept. 16, in Wickenburg. They had only eight players due to some already having been placed in quarantine due to the virus. The missing players included most of their hitters. In spite of this, they swept the Wranglers, 3 games to 0.

“The girls really stepped up in that one,” Maya said.

The Broncs are now 1-1 against 3A opponents and 3-2 overall. They have moved up to third place in the 3A West due to a better record against 3A opponents that Odyssey Institute and Kingman.

Here are the standings in the 3A West region as of Sept. 19. Teams are listed by record against region opponents, record against 3A teams, and overall record:

Tonopah Valley:  0-0, 2-0, 2-4

Yuma Catholic:  0-0, 1-0, 5-1

PARKER:  0-0, 1-1, 3-2

Odyssey Institute:  0-0, 2-2, 2-4

Kingman:  0-0, 0-1, 0-5
