The Parker Broncs boys’ basketball team had a split week last week, going 1-1. Despite this, they saw their postseason chances improve as they moved up three notches in the Arizona Interscholastic Association power points system. They are now ranked No. 21 in the state among 2A teams. The top 24 teams qualify for either the state tournament or a play-in game.
The Broncs started the week Wednesday, Feb. 5, with a 51-40 win over the Tonopah Valley Phoenix at home. They closed things out with a close 46-42 loss to the Arizona Lutheran Academy Coyotes Feb. 7 on the road.
The Arizona Lutheran game saw the Coyotes take an early lead, with Broncs nagging at them as the game moved along. The Broncs were never able to catch up, but the Coyotes really couldn’t pull away. It looked like they might be pulling away at the end of the third quarter as the Coyotes took a seven-point lead, 34-27. Then, the Broncs outscored them in the fourth quarter to make it close. In the end, the Broncs came up short.
The Broncs have just one game left in their 2019-20 regular season. They’ll face the Trivium Prep Crimson Knights Tuesday, Feb. 11 at home. In their last meeting Jan. 24 at Trivium, the Broncs were handed a 74-38 loss.
As for the standings, the Broncs have a chance to finish the regular season with an even record if they defeat Trivium Prep. As of Feb. 9, their record was 3-4 in the 2A West, which put them in fourth place. They are 6-5 against other 2A teams, and 8-9 overall.
If the Broncs are able to maintain that No. 21 ranking in AIA power points, they’ll play the No. 16 team in a state tournament play-in game Feb. 19. As of Feb. 9, that team is the St. Johns Redskins. The game would be played in St. Johns.
The 2019-20 regular season will end for the Broncs Tuesday, Feb. 11 at home when they face Trivium Prep. This is also Senior Night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in the O.B. Francis Gym.
