Fighters for Parker-based Mixxed Bloodz MMA went 3-4 at King of the Cage River Wars, a mixed martial arts event held May 18 at the BlueWater Resort & Casino. Their wins included one of the co-main events.

That bout was a lightweight match-up between Parker’s Ryan Shatto and Bryce Callaghan of Blythe, Calif. Shatto, a former wrestler and state champion while at Parker High School, won on a technical knock-out at 2:01 in the first round when referee Raul Peralta stopped the fight.

This was Shatto’s second MMA fight win, and his overall record is 2-3. Callaghan’s record is now 3-3.

The other co-main event was to have featured two veteran Welterweights making their professional debuts. Wesley Pierce of Phoenix is 11-1, while Javahn Matthews is 5-2. However, Matthews was not at River Wars. The co-main event featured former King of the Cage Champion Sam Liera of Fullerton, Calif. against Frank “The Nightmare” Schuman of Wisconsin.

Liera won this match when Schuman tapped out at 1:17 in the second round.

Mixxed Bloodz MMA had the largest number of fighters on the card of any club. They had seven fighters in all.

One of Mixxed Bloodz’s wins came when John Russell defeated Matt Gutierrez in a welterweight match-up. Gutierrez tapped out at 2:19 in the first round, handing Russell a TKO.

Mixxed Bloodz won a third bout in a battle of the big boys:  Chris Tahbo of Parker faced Mashonte Mailboy of Chinle, Ariz. in a heavyweight match. This fight went into the second round. Tahbo won in a TKO at 1:19 in the second round when referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight.

Other bouts with Mixxed Bloodz’ fighters included the first match on the card. This was also the only one that went the full three rounds. Chris Meyers of Mixxed Bloodz lost to Tray Black of Blythe in a unanimous decision. The three judges gave Black 89 points to 82 for Meyers.

Another Mixxed Bloodz fighter, Justin Musgrove, faced Joseph Gabaldon in the second match of the evening, a welterweight match. Gabaldon won on a TKO in the 1:49 in the first round when Musgrove tapped out.

Another former Parker High wrestler, Pacen Scoggin, made his MMA debut against Brandon Rivera of Victorville, Calif. in a junior flyweight match. Scoggin more than held his own in the first round, but, by the end of the second round, he was showing signs of being tired. Referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight after the second round, and Rivera won by a TKO.

Tommy Ochoa of Mixxed Bloodz faced Luigi Bisconti in a lightweight match. Bisconti won on a TKO when the referee stopped the fight at 2:19 in the second round.

A Lake Havasu City fighter, Tim Livingston, faced Brooks Callaghan of Blythe in light heavyweight match-up. Callaghan won on a TKO when the referee stopped the fight at 1:25 in the second round.

Vincent Arrendando defeated Jesus Moreno on a TKO when referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight at 2 minutes in the second round. Beltran was acting on the advice of the cageside physician, who was concerned about a laceration on Moreno’s forehead.

Mixxed Bloodz coaches Danny Crayton and Huluna Reyes said they were very happy with how their fighters performed.

“Every fighter performed excellent,” Reyes said.

“The team impressed me,” Crayton said. “We don’t make excuses, we just get better.”

Crayton and Reyes said the team’s wins were “with no mercy.”

This was the first MMA event at the BlueWater to be produced by King of the Cage, a nationwide MMA organization. They have many major sponsors, including General Tire and Lucas Oil.

This was also the first MMA event to be held outdoors in the BlueWater’s Amphitheatre. Previous events had been held in the showroom.

Replays of this event will be broadcast to more than 50 million homes in the United States on MAV-TV.
