The Parker Broncs varsity football team is in the Arizona Interscholastic Association state 2A playoffs. The Broncs are seeded No. 13, and they’ll face the No. 4 seed, the Morenci Wildcats, at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in Morenci.
The Broncs finished the season in second place in the 2A Verde section with a record of 3-1 against their section opponents and an overall record of 6-3. They closed out the regular season with a 70-30 win over the Glendale Prep Griffins Oct. 26 in Glendale.
The only other 2A Verde team to reach the playoffs is the Trivium Prep Crimson Knights. The Knights are seeded No. 2 in the state tournament. They were 4-0 in the section, and 9-0 overall. On Sept. 28, the Broncs came very close to upsetting the Knights in game whose final score was Trivium Prep 48, Parker 42. This was the most competitive game Trivium Prep had all season.
Trivium Prep will face the No. 15 seed, the Red Mesa Redskins, at home Nov. 2.
The Wildcats placed third in the 2A Black section with a 2-2 record, and they were 8-2 overall. They closed out the regular season with a 29-0 win over the St. Johns Redskins Oct. 26.
Curiously, the only two teams to defeat the Wildcats this season were two of the 2A Black rivals, Thatcher and Round Valley. Thatcher is the No. 1 seed at the state tournament, having gone 4-0 in their section and 10-0 overall. Round Valley is ranked No. 3 at the state tournament with a 3-1 record in their section and an 8-2 overall record.
The winner of the game between Parker and Morenci will face the winner of the game between No. 12 Scottsdale Christian and No. 5 Phoenix Christian on Nov. 9.
