With a 3-game sweep of the Desert Christian Eagles of Tucson Oct. 30, the Parker Broncs’ volleyball team has earned a trip to the Arizona Interscholastic Association 2A Tournament, which will be held Nov. 2-3 at Arcadia High School in Phoenix.
In the first round, the No. 11 seed Broncs will be facing the No. 5 seed, the Veritas Prep Falcons.
The scores against Desert Christian were 25-9, 25-13 and 25-14.
The only game that appeared to be competitive was the third one. At one point, the Broncs led by 9-8 as the Eagles were pacing them. Then, the Broncs built up a lead until they were ahead, 17-12. After that, they put on an 8-2 surge that saw them win by 11 points, 25-14.
Demi Durham led Parker with 10 kills. Kaila Maxwell, who usually works out of the back row, had 2 kills. Tatiana Cuadras served up 5 aces, and Savana Flores had 31 assists. On defense, Elisa Martinez had 19 digs.
The Broncs are back at the state tournament after failing to make the tournament last year. That marked the end of a 17-year streak where the Broncs qualified for state.
“It’s nice to make it back to the state tournament,” Assistant Coach Dan Maya said.
“I’m extremely proud of the girls,” Head Coach Marie Maya said. “Considering where they started and where they are now.”
Veritas Prep placed second in the 2A Metro section with a 5-1 record against their section opponents. The only 2A Metro team to defeat them this year was Scottsdale Christian, the No. 1 ranked team in the state. The Falcons were 11-5 against 2A opponents and 12-6 overall.
The match between Parker and Veritas Prep will take place at 11 a.m. Nov. 2 in Gym B at Arcadia High School, which is located at 4703 E. Indian School Road in Phoenix. The winner of the match will play the winner of the match between No. 14 Chandler Prep and No. 3 Glendale Prep at 7 p.m. Nov. 2 in Gym B.
The state 2A championship match will be held at 5 p.m. Nov. 3 at Tempe High School.
