The Parker Broncs’ baseball team is still winless on their 2021 season. They played the Odyssey Institute Minotaurs of Buckeye twice last week, and they got a taste of why the Minotaurs are tied for first place in the 3A West. The Broncs lost 14-3 March 30 at home, and then lost 8-4 April 1 at Odyssey.
The Broncs are also in the 3A West, and these were their first region games of the season.
The Minotaurs got things going with two runs in the top of the first off Parker starter Joe Martinez. They added three runs in both the second and third innings.
The Broncs couldn’t seem to get anything going for the first five innings. Odyssey starter Tristan Bolton, a freshman, had a no-hitter going through three innings, and he gave up just one hit in the first five.
The sixth inning saw the Minotaurs offense explode for six runs on eight hits and a walk. They also took advantage of passed balls to move their runners around the bases. Cameron Poole and Tyson Ross had come in to pitch for the Broncs in relief of Martinez.
In their half of the sixth inning, the Broncs’ offense finally came alive. After Martinez singled and Armando Flores hit into a double play, Collin Stanton walked. He scored on a triple from Poole. Ross walked, went to second on a single from Gage Honomichl, went to third when Zavier Zeyouma walked, and then scored when Joseph Perez walked. Honomichl’s single also scored Poole.
It proved to be too little, too late as the game was called after six innings when the 10-run “mercy rule” was invoked.
Parker Coach Sean Golding said the Minotaurs played sound, fundamental baseball.
“Our defense was good,” Golding said of the Broncs. “Our bats finally came alive in the sixth inning. We need to get them going in the first inning.”
The Broncs played the Minotaurs again April 1 in Buckeye and lost, 8-4. The Broncs were down 8-0 before they scored three runs in the sixth and added one more in the seventh. Martinez had three hits for the Broncs, while Ross, Zeyouma, Honomichl and Perez each scored a run.
The two losses leave the Broncs at 0-2 against their 3A West rivals, 0-3 against other 3A teams, and 0-7 overall. They’re in fourth place in the 3A West. They have two games this week, both region games. They’ll be on the road April 6 to play the Tonopah Valley Phoenix. The Phoenix will come to Parker April 9 to play the Broncs. Game time is set for 3:45 p.m.
