The Parker Broncs volleyball team took on what may be their toughest 2A opponent this season as they faced the Scottsdale Christian Eagles Sept. 18 at Parker High School. The Eagles, a perennial 2A powerhouse, came away with a win, 3 sets to 1. However, as Assistant Coach Dan Maya pointed out, not that many teams can win even one set against the Eagles. Of their three wins, the Broncs gave the Eagles a run for their money in two of them.
The Eagles took the first set, 25-7. The Broncs responded in the second game by winning, 25-17. The Eagles won the final two games by scores of 25-15.
Of the first set, Dan Maya said, “they got into our heads.”
Following the first set, Head Coach Marie Maya pointed out to the girls they made 22 errors. She told them they can’t expect to beat a team like Scottsdale Christian when they played like that.
In the second set, the Broncs committed just eight errors, and they won, 25-17. At one point, the Broncs were down by five points, 10-5, but then they began to catch up. They tied it at 12-12 and then pulled ahead. The Eagles made a late to pull within 3 points, 19-16, but then the Broncs went into high gear and won it by eight points.
The third set saw the Broncs take an early lead, but then the Eagles tied it up and ran off a streak of eight unanswered points to pull ahead for good. The final was Scottsdale Christian 25, Parker 15.
The Eagles got ahead early in the fourth set, and, after streaks of eight and five unanswered points, they were in the driver’s seat the rest of the way for another 25-15 win.
Parker’s offense was led by hitters Demi Durham with 14 kills, Tatiana Cuadras with 8 kills, and Alicia Briones with 6 kills. Zahrah Schultz served up four aces and had 23 assists.
On defense, Cuadras had 10 digs. Schultz, had 9, Tallia Robledo had 7, and Briones, Durham and Casandra Sandoval each had 6.
Dan Maya said the Broncs played well against a very tough opponent. He noted not many teams can take even one set from the Eagles.
“They fought,” he said. “We just lost to a better team.”
The previous evening, Sept. 17, the Broncs swept the Kingman Academy Tigers, 3 sets to 0, in Kingman. The scores were 25-15, 25-19 and 25-19.
Durham had 15 kills, served 4 aces and made 11 digs. Cuadras had 7 kills, served 7 aces, and made 14 digs. Tallia Robledo had 4 kills, served a pair of aces, and made 10 digs. Schultz served 2 aces, made 11 digs and had 20 assists.
The Broncs are now 5-2 overall. They’re 1-1 against 2A opponents and are currently ranked third in the 2A West behind the Trivium Prep Crimson Knights and the Arizona Lutheran Coyotes. They have yet to play any of their 2A West rivals.
The Broncs will play in the Wolves Classic Tournament at Estrella Foothills High School this weekend. Their next home match will be Wednesday Sept. 25, when they face the Kingman Academy Tigers. The varsity is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
