Parker High School has just had their first experience with athletic events being canceled or postponed by fears over the coronavirus. Phoenix Country Day School has announced they will be canceling their baseball and softball games in the week of March 23 through March 30.

PCDS was scheduled to play the Broncs’ baseball and softball teams March 28 in Parker. They were also scheduled the play the Camp Verde Cowboys during that period.

In an e-mail sent March 12 to the parties involved, PCDS Athletic Director Shane Lewis said the school has its two-week spring break planned to start March 13. The decision was made to cancel athletic events during this period due to concerns over the coronavirus.

“Our administration has decided to cancel everything during this two-week period and will reassess everything when we are back in school beginning March 30,” Lewis said. “I will be in contact with Parker and Camp Verde to reschedule if needed.”

Parker High Athletic Director Dan Maya said they would try to reschedule the games, if possible.

Arizona Interscholastic Association North Area Commissioner Michael Gillespie told Maya the officials had been cancelled for the March 28 games. Maya replied by saying he would let Gillespie know if and when the games can be rescheduled.

The AIA has said it’s up to their member schools to decide whether games will be canceled or postponed. They advise the schools for follow the advice of health care professionals when it comes to matters like the coronavirus.

On the field, the Broncs’ baseball and softball teams didn’t fare well against the Wickenburg Wranglers March 10 in Wickenburg. The baseball team lost, 15-7, and saw their season record drop to 1-2. The softball team lost as well, by a score of 14-4. The overall season record is now 2-2.

The softball team will have a road game March 16 against the Santa Cruz Valley Dust Devils. They’ve faced the Dust Devils already once this season. They defeated them 6-5 in extra innings in their home opener Feb. 28.

The baseball team won’t have a game until Wednesday, March 18, then they faced the Kingman Academy Tigers at home. The softball team will be playing Kingman Academy’s softball team at the same time. The games start at 3:45 p.m.
