The girls’ regular season basketball 2A West title is coming down to the wire. With just one game left, the Parker Broncs are in first place with a 6-1 record against their region opponents. The Arizona Lutheran Academy Coyotes are right behind them with a record of 5-1, but they still have two games left to play.
The only way Arizona Lutheran could take the title outright would be if they win both their remaining games and the Broncs lose their final game of the season Feb. 11 at home against the Trivium Prep Crimson Knights.
If the Broncs win their final game of the season, the best that Arizona Lutheran could hope for would be a tie, and that would happen only if they win both of their remaining games. The Arizona Interscholastic Association would likely award the title to Parker as they would have a better record against other 2A schools.
The first criterion by which the AIA selects placing in the event of a tie in region records is which of the teams in a tie has the better record against the other team. In the case of the Broncs and the Coyotes, they are 1-1 against each other.
A loss for the Coyotes in either of their two games would mean a tie if the Broncs lost their game against Trivium Prep. Again, a tie would mean the title would go to the Broncs, as they have the better record against 2A teams.
The Broncs could’ve clinched the title outright Friday, Feb. 7, when they played the Coyotes on the road. However, they came away with a 46-27 loss. This was their first loss of the season against one of their 2A West rivals.
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, Feb. 5, the Broncs defeated the Tonopah Valley Phoenix, at home.
The Broncs are now 6-1 against their 2A West rivals and are in first place. They’re 8-3 against other 2A teams, and 12-5 overall. They are ranked 16th in the state in AIA power points.
If the Broncs maintain their No. 16 position, they will qualify host a state tournament play-in game to be played at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18. Their opponent will be the Nov. 17 team. As of Feb. 9, that team is the Phoenix Christian Cougars.
The Broncs will play their final regular season game of the season Tuesday, Feb. 11 at home against the Trivium Prep Crimson Knights. This will also be Senior Night. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the O.B. Francis Gym.
