Jan. 6, 2021 will be remembered as a dark day in U.S. history. A mob tried to take over the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. A mob that was incited by the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
What this mob was seeking to do was overturn the results of a legally conducted election in support of a President who has repeatedly made dubious claims of vote fraud.
If you didn’t think we had a demagogue in the White House, it should be painfully clear now that we do. He may have done some good, especially for the economy, but he’s a demagogue all the same.
Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised. Those who have known the President for years, including his niece, Mary, a psychologist, have said he would be at his most dangerous if he lost the election. The man hates to lose, and he is mean and very vindictive.
I’ve already seen people defending those who tried to take over the Capitol. The claim is they were letting Congress know what they thought of the stolen election. The claim is made that at least they weren’t like Antifa or Black Lives Matter, who would’ve burned the place down.
At the same time, I see those who claim it was an example of white privilege that these mostly white people thought they could take over the Capitol with no consequences. Had it been a black crowd that did this, the police would’ve responded more forcefully.
Excuse me? The Capitol Police were overwhelmed. Five people are dead, including a police officer. Look at the photos of the cops with their weapons drawn. If the Capitol Police had the fancy riot gear other, larger departments have, you can bet they would’ve used them.
Maybe the question should be why weren’t the police better prepared? When BLM demonstrated in Washington, the place looked like an armed camp. You’d be hard-pressed to say race didn’t play a role in the police being so unprepared for this Trump crowd.
As for BLM protests and opposed to the Trump crowd, I’ll be blunt: If you supported or are sympathetic to the people who tried to take over the Capitol, then you have no right to complain about riots or demonstrations by Antifa or BLM.
At the same time, if you supported criminal actions approved by BLM, like the burnings in Minneapolis or the mass looting in Chicago, then you have no right to complain about or condemn the actions at the Capitol.
You are both part of the problem. America is seriously infected with the “them & us” mentality. One symptom of this is, when our righteous, holy group does something, it’s okay. However, when the nasty, rotten people in another group do the same thing, it’s bad.
Right is right and wrong is wrong, no matter who does it! This is a point that many Americans appear to have forgotten. Looting in Chicago was wrong. Trying to take over the Capitol was also wrong.
As for the claims this was an example of “white privilege,”that is why it is so important that prosecutors file charges against all the people they can identify who were involved in this. We must make it very clear there will be consequences to actions like these, no matter what color you are.
On a related matter, did you notice that everything President Trump has done since the election appears to have been taken from Dr. Joseph Goebbels’ “Big Lie” playbook?
Goebbels was Adolf Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda and Enlightenment in Nazi Germany. The “Big Lie” principle is that if you tell a lie and repeat if often enough and loudly enough, people will start to believe it.
That’s what Trump has done. First, he set himself up as a savior figure for the nation, and he has many people who believe he is just that. Since the election, he, his attorneys, a large number of Republicans and the sycophant right-wing media have repeated over and over and over again the election was fraudulent. They keep promising lots of proof, but they have presented little evidence except anecdotes and bits and pieces that have been debunked.
Federal judges, many of them appointed by Trump, have rejected the claims, saying there’s nothing there. Attorney General William Barr even said there was no sign of vote fraud that could change the results of the election.
Still, the claims were repeated over and over again and ever louder. The debunkers were ignored, or called liars themselves. The judges and other officials were dismissed as part of the “deep state conspiracy.”
The result? Millions of Americans now believe the election was fraudulent and stolen from President Trump. It may take many election cycles before trust in our electoral system is fully restored.
Goebbels would’ve been proud.
The date of publication is Jan. 13. There is one week left in the Trump Administration. We can only hope he doesn’t do more damage on the way out than he already has.
