Peaches & Pits

Peaches to all the law enforcement agencies and officers who were involved in the high-speed chase the evening of March 3 that led to the arrest of Patrick Kalember. This was a very dangerous situation, and the potential for disaster was real. The fact that the only injuries were minor ones to a La Paz County Sheriff’s Deputy shows how well they handled the situation. A job well done, everyone!

Peaches to Career-Technical Education. Across the nation, jobs for skilled tradespeople are going begging because there aren’t enough people to fill them. CTE seeks to correct that. It’s nice to see the schools making a real effort at meeting the needs of their communities.

Pits to useless college majors. Excuse me, but why would a seemingly intelligent young person go many thousands of dollars into debt for a degree in, say, gender studies? Just what sort of job were you thinking such a degree would land you? It’s sad to see college graduates whose job skills qualify them only for low-wage, entry-level jobs.

Pits to the Arizona Legislature for taking no action regarding the depletion of groundwater supplies in rural areas of the state due to heavy agricultural use. Such actions seem incredibly short-sighted. This is a desert, and it’s called that for a reason:  there’s very little water! We have to take care of our water supply, or we’ll end up making this state uninhabitable for anyone.

Peaches to the people at Food City’s deli. They’re always so friendly and the food is tasty. It’s fun to get my lunch there.

Peaches to RZ Pizza in Salome. I tried it for the first time last week, and I was impressed! I liked how thick the toppings were. We have some really good pizza places in La Paz County. You’ve heard of the Arizona Peace Trail? I’m going to create my own trail, the Arizona Pizza Trail. It will include all the good pizza places in the state. I’ll have to have La Piazza, RZ’s, and Silly Al’s on that trail.

(That last one sounds like the sort of thing my friend Randy Hartless would come up with.).

Peaches to Ruperto’s for being open 24 hours a day. If I get the hungries for a sausage breakfast burrito at 2 a.m., I know I can go over there.

Pits to the remaining Democratic candidates, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Why does it look like they’re trying to hand President Donald Trump a second term? I’ll say this much:  given the personalities of the different candidates we can expect the most . . . entertaining Presidential debates we’ve seen in a long time.

We want to know: who do you think deserves a peach? How about a pit? Send your ideas to the Parker Pioneer, P.O. Box 3365, Parker, AZ 85344. You can also send them to pioneer@havasunews.com. We won’t print your name if you ask us not to, but we do need your name on any submissions.
