The co-owner of a local gun shop that also sold gold, silver and collectibles took his own life the evening of Sunday, May 24. Kevin Shepherd, 63, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his shop, Gold Pan Dan’s Guns & Gold, at 820 California Avenue.
The shop was known for many years as Guns FX.
Parker Interim Police Chief Mike Bailey said they received a call at 5 p.m. about a suicidal subject with a firearm. When officers arrived on the scene, they closed off the area and began negotiating with Shepherd. Bailey said they negotiated for approximately an hour-and-a half before Shepherd shot himself. He was declared dead at the scene.
The area was closed off until 7:30 p.m. In addition to the Parker Police Department, officers from the Colorado River Indian Tribes Police Department, the La Paz County Sheriff’s Office, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety also responded.
The shop was the scene of a major accident in November 2018. A car crashed through the collectibles side of the shop in the evening of Nov. 10, 2018 and caused major damage. It also damaged the Upper Room Church and Thrift Store, which were located across a walkway from Gold Pan Dan’s.
At the time, Shepherd said many one-of-a-kind items were lost.
The car had been involved in a high-speed chase with police officers. Two men, David Rodriguez Jr. and Vincent Isaac Prieto, were arrested in this incident. They were both Tribal members and were turned over to CRIT authorities.
