A boat fire the morning of Wednesday, June 9 sent several people to area hospitals, including three to the burn center at Maricopa County Hospital in Phoenix.
The call went out at 9:16 a.m. about a boat on fire in front of Branson’s Resort, which is located north of Parker on Riverside Drive at the intersection with Golf Course Road. When La Paz County Sheriff’s Deputies and Buckskin Firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a boat fully engulfed in flames on the river drifting towards a dock with other boats tied to it. Buckskin’s fire boat used a water stream to attack the fire and push the boat to shore.
There was no damage to the dock area or other boats.
Sheriff’s Deputies said they were told there had been at least one explosion.
There were five victims in the explosion and fire. There were two pediatric burn patients and an adult who were flown by helicopter to the burn center in Phoenix. Another adult with head trauma, burns and a leg fracture was transported by ground to Havasu Regional Medical Center. Another patient refused treatment or transport.
The Sheriff’s Office said none of the injuries were life threatening.
Based on the information the deputies received, the Sheriff’s Office said it appeared the fire was the result of a mechanical failure on the boat. They also stated the incident is still under investigation.
Other agencies that responded included American Medical Response, Tri-State Care Flight, and Native Air. La Paz County Park, which is located next to Branson’s Resort, provided a landing area for the helicopters.
