Frogs impressive in loss

The Salome Frogs varsity boys' basketball team lost their first game of the season, 71-52 to Tempe Prep Nov. 23, but their coach was impressed with their performance.

Coach Mike O'Boyle said Tempe Prep's starters were seniors and juniors, whereas Salome's starters included two freshmen, two sophomores, and a junior. On top of this, Tempe Prep's players were bigger and taller than Salome's.

In spite of this, O'Boyle said the Frogs played a tough game against Tempe Prep, a school which went from 1A to 2A for the 2009-10 school year.

"They handled it well," O'Boyle said. "They played tough."

Jeffrey Lard led the Frogs with 21 points. He was 9 for 17 shooting from the floor, including a pair of three-pointers. Jose Gavillanes had 14 points and grabbed five rebounds. Nathan Jones had 8 points and six rebounds.

The Frogs' next game was Dec. 1 against Tonopah. Their first home game of the 2009-10 season will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 1 against Phoenix Day School for the Deaf.
